There are many ways to reach out to others with the gospel message, as modeled by Jesus Himself! Jesus reached out in unique ways that reflected sensitivity to the questions and needs of specific individuals and communities.
You probably have someone in mind that you would like to reach with the gospel. Maybe that person is a family member, someone you know from work, or is in your circle of friends. Maybe you feel unsure, fearful, or overly responsible to reach out. The first thing to remember is that God is at work through his Holy Spirit. He will strengthen you and draw people’s hearts to himself. It’s good to know that only God can change someone’s heart! We cannot “convert” anyone… this is the work of God alone. Here is some other information on how to present the gospel message.
How do I build relationships with people I want to reach?
-
Build rapport by accepting the person as they are and listening with interest.
-
Invite the person to share in an activity with you. Perhaps he/she is ready to attend a church event with you.
-
Share your personal resources and allow your friend to serve you.
-
As your relationship grows and you experience events together, share parts of the gospel that connect with current situations. Don't pressure the relationship by sharing the whole gospel at one time when it is not appropriate.
-
Reach out through hospitality.

How do I turn a conversation toward Christ?
Possible questions to ask:
-
Do you think about spiritual things? What do you think about them?
-
How would you describe God?
-
Do you go to church?
-
Do you think that spiritual values affect your work and/or family life?
-
What do you treasure most?
-
How do you actively pursue spiritual growth?
How do I tell someone about having a personal relationship with Jesus?
Pray:
-
Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit through dependence on him.
-
Ask God to prepare the person’s heart to receive his message and be protected from the evil one.
-
Ask God to bring other people into the life of the person to encourage him/her to know God.
-
Ask God to make it clear to the person how God has been calling to him/her.
-
Ask God for strength, his words, and boldness to speak his message. (Ask other people to pray for this as well.)

Be Courageous and Courteous:
When can I consider outreach successful?
Successful outreach is not:
-
The number of people we meet
-
The number of converts we see
-
The number of church attendees we produce
Successful outreach is:
-
Taking the initiative through the Holy Spirit and leaving the results to God
-
Remembering that God uses many means to draw people to himself: creation, scripture, circumstances, the Holy Spirit, and Christians.
-
Using both your words and walk (living your life according to the bible).
